One of the most important steps in pool construction is hiring the right design and building team. During your consultation, pay close attention to the impression you get when discussing the following topics:

Budget. You’re not going to feel good about working with a construction team who blows through your budget and continually tries to upcharge you for additional features and upscale materials. Here at Top Construction and Design, you can count on our creative solutions to make the most of your budget without worrying about going over.
Functionality. Your design team should be interested in exploring how you envision using your pool. For instance, will you be using your pool more for lounging or for lively games of water polo or volleyball? Do you see yourself swimming laps? In other words, getting a sense of how your family will use your pool is important in creating a personalized design.
Aesthetic preferences. Along with functionality, your design team will also want to get an idea of what your aesthetic preferences are. If you aren’t quite sure, that’s okay! A good design team will know which questions to ask and be able to pitch ideas until you land on a visual style that speaks to your taste!
Landscaping. Landscaping shouldn’t be an afterthought when it comes to pool construction. So, make sure that your design team includes ideas on how they plan on incorporating greenery around your pool area, as well as ongoing maintenance considerations after construction is finished.
Project management. Finally, your consultation and planning process with the right design team should cover project management. This includes factors such as the timelines, considerations for weather, building permits and other details.

Consider Florida-friendly building materials and construction features

An important piece of advice that we always give to Florida homeowners is to make sure you’re using materials that are well-suited for our climate. Some considerations include:

Concrete/gunite versus fiberglass. Choosing the material for the structure of your pool is one of the biggest decisions of the project. And, there are pros and cons for going with either concrete/gunite or fiberglass. For Florida conditions, both options will give you longevity and durability, while something like a vinyl lining will probably not hold up well over time.
Pool decking. The material that you use around your pool will be exposed to our Southern Florida sunshine, humidity, and occasional extreme weather incidents. So, we typically recommend a strong, weather-resistant material such as durable stone or concrete pavers, brick, porcelain tile or wood composite.
Landscaping. While our neighbors in the northern part of the state enjoy subtropical conditions, here in South Florida, we have a fully tropical climate. That means that our landscaping here should be designed for high heat and humidity and be able to thrive in high pH soil.
Flooding considerations. Here in Fort Lauderdale and surrounding areas, our pools need to be built with possible flooding and tropical storms in mind. We make sure to design pools to prevent sinking, wall collapse or cracking, soil erosion, or other flood-related issues.

Familiarize yourself with the regulations around pool enclosures

Here in Florida, the building code requires certain safety measures such as fencing, a barrier, or a screened-in patio around waterways such as pools or hot tubs.

Because there are a few different options for these enclosures, we can work with you to find a style and design that aligns with your lifestyle and taste.

Anticipate how construction might impact your routine

Your construction team will be able to give you an estimate of how long the project will take so that you can make the necessary accommodations for your family and pets. Depending on the project, we may recommend that you vacate the house during some of the noisier or invasive parts of the project, such as excavation. For example, pets who are sensitive to loud noises or the presence of strangers on the property may need to be housed elsewhere during the building process to lower their stress.

Overall, it’s your choice whether you want to stay home or clear out during pool construction. But have a chat with your building team to get an idea of which phases will be the most disruptive so that you can anticipate and re-organize your routine if needed.
